Insurance and Billing Specialist for Eye Associates: Responsibilities for this position include proper documentation of claim forms and the billing of surgical procedures, maintain accounts receivable files, and follows up on collection of A/R.
- Two years of medical office experience required
- Familiarity with automated billing systems including electronic transmission and remittances
- Understandings of CPT-4 procedural coding with related modifiers and ICD-9 current diagnosis classifications.
- Understanding of HMO insurance requirements and Medicare billing guidelines
Ability to work independently requires frequent judgment and response, adequate written and verbal skills with appropriate interpersonal /communication skills.
Primary duties include:
- Posts and balances the daily surgery charges.
- Posts and balances daily receipts from patients, insurance companies or other sources.
- Electronic claim submission for multiple insurance companies including Medicare, CHP, BC/BS and private carriers with appropriate procedure codes and diagnosis codes
- Handle all correspondence from insurance carriers
- Answers patient phone calls about accounts
- Follows up on outstanding insurance claims or unpaid patient account balances
- Processes patient statements or a regular basis
- Maintains current patient insurance information in the database
- Ability to identify and resolve billing or coding errors
- Meets with surgery patients to discuss financial obligations where necessary
- Responsible for preparing refund reports for overpayment of claims
- Coordinate the surgery schedule faxed for physician office
Secondary duties include:
- Assist front desk during PRN absences
- Communicate with referring physician practice
- Other duties and responsibilities as assigned by supervisor
Knowledge of NextGen software a plus

Ophthalmic scribe: Experience preferred but willing to train the right individual. This job involves the ability to multitask, to learn and spell medical & ophthalmic jargon correctly. It also involves good penmanship, the ability to utilize a computer and type in information quickly and accurately. This person must be willing to learn standard medical and ophthalmic abbreviations, the ability to understand the principals in eye glass prescriptions and the ability to write out or record spectacle prescriptions. This person must be able to learn other aspects of an ophthalmic techs’ job such as assessing and recording visual acuities, history taking, special testing, etc. They must be able to communicate effectively with a patient as well as the physician, be able to answer call lights, walk patients to different rooms, assist the physician in the room and be responsible for making sure the chart i.e. paper or electronic is documented completely and accurately for that visit.
